Supervision is mandatory for counsellors, but can be useful for many other professionals – managers, teachers, clergy, nursing staff, social workers etc. It offers a safe, confidential space to examine and reflect on all aspects of working with people (ethical, relational, organisational, pastoral and personal).
Usually, sessions would be on a monthly basis and last for 1.5 to 2 hours. They could be on a one-to-one basis or in groups.
My preferred model is an integration of Hawkins & Shohet, Page & Wosket, and Inskipp & Proctor). I believe these models combined offer both a framework and a map of the territory, thus providing a broad spectrum of opportunities.
The cost of supervision is from £40 - £50 per hour. I also run a reduced fee group for counsellors starting out in private practice.
The importance of having adequate support when you work in the helping professions is emphasized by Ram Dass & Gorman (How Can I Help? 1985:86)
“Many helpers, when they themselves are suffering are incapable of accepting support, or al least receiving it easily. Yet they may be impatient with those they’re working with for not accepting aid or counsel readily enough. Chances are, if you can’t accept help, you can’t really give it”.
